What is ISO/IEC 22237-3 about?
ISO/IEC 22237-3 is the third part of our information technology series. This series focuses on data centre facilities and infrastructure. ISO/IEC 22237-3 specifies power supplies to and power distribution within data centres. This power supply and power distribution is based on the criteria and classification for availability, physical security, and energy efficiency enablement.
In addition, ISO/IEC 22237-3 depicts requirements and recommendations regarding power supply to data centres. ISO/IEC 22237-3 specifies requirements for power distribution systems as well as devices for the measurement of the power consumption.
ISO/IEC 22237-3 also elaborates on power quality characteristics at points along the power distribution system. Further, ISO/IEC 22237-3 walks you through the integration of these with management tools.
Note 1: Safety and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements are outside the scope of this document.
Note 2: Under ISO/IEC 22237-3 the use of the data centre stored energy or alternate sources to be used by the grid is not in the scope of this document.

- Data centres
- IT firms
- Network operators
- Network enterprises that manage data for customers
- IT divisions of companies
ISO/IEC 22237-3 on data centre facilities and infrastructure applies to these professionals:
- Data operators

Why should you use ISO/IEC 22237-3?
ISO/IEC 22237-3 serves as a guiding document to be used in collaboration among architects, building designers, builders, and system and installation designers. Today, every kind of firm stores and transmits large volumes of data on a daily basis. Data centres need to provide modular, scalable and flexible facilities and infrastructure to fulfill this need. The guidelines given in ISO/IEC 22237-3 help you to distribute and use energy efficiently for your data centre facility.
ISO/IEC 22237-3 addresses facilities and infrastructures for power supplies to, and power distribution within, data centres together with the interfaces for monitoring the performance of those facilities and infrastructures.
ISO/IEC 22237-3 helps you to understand requirements for power supply, power generation and devices for measuring power consumption. ISO/IEC 22237-3 gives you recommends for lightning protection and telecommunications infrastructure bonding.
ISO/IEC 22237-3 helps you in monitering the performance of facilities and infrastructure of your power supplies within data centres. ISO/IEC 22237-3 also helps you to increase the effeciency of these supplies.
ISO/IEC 22237-3 helps you to become more environment-sustainable, as energy consumption of data centres has become critical - both from an environmental point of view, and with respect to economic considerations (cost of energy). ISO/IEC 22237-3 achieves this by guiding you to create a more efficient power supply system.
What’s changed since the last update?
ISO/IEC 22237-3:2021 supersedes PD ISO/IEC TS 222373:2018 which is withdrawn due to the following changes:
- As it is technically revised
- Figures are updated
- Availability requirements are aligned with respect to part 1 and 4
