What is ISO/IEC 29160 about?
ISO/IEC 29160 discusses RFID Emblem, an easily identified visual guide that indicates the presence of radio frequency identification. ISO/IEC 29160 specifies an effective design and use of the RFID Emblem in information technology to indicate the frequency range.
ISO/IEC 29160 specifies an RFID Index, which can be included in the RFID Emblem to address the complication added by the wide range of RFID tags in existence (frequency, protocol, and data structure). The RFID Index is a two-character code that provides specific information about tags and interrogators.
Note 1: Under ISO/IEC 29160 the location of the RFID Emblem is not addressed on a label.
Note 2: Specific placement requirements are left to application standards developers under ISO/IEC 29160.
Who is ISO/IEC 29160 for?
ISO/IEC 29160 on RFID Emblem is relevant to:
- RFID label, tag, encoder, or interrogator manufacturer
- RFID labels and tags printing companies
Why should you use ISO/IEC 29160?
Radiofrequency identification (RFID) is a wireless system that is comprised of two components tags and readers. It concerns all aspects of the supply chain from manufacturing to the end-user or consumer. Industrial users, retailers, and consumers must know when an RFID tag is present in the product. RFID Emblem provides a readily identifiable method to inform about the presence of RFID.
ISO/IEC 29160 can help maintain the privacy of the consumer by informing the consumers about whether an item or product contains an RFID tag or not.
ISO/IEC 29160 guides the visual identification of RFID transponders, interrogators, and tagged items.
Effective RFID Emblem helps in better visual identification and can enhance the quality of RFID-based data capture techniques and fulfil requirements of consumer privacy protection.
What’s changed since the last update?
ISO/IEC 29160:2020 is the second edition which replaces the first edition ISO/IEC 29160:2012, which has been technically revised. The main changes are:
- Update in RFID markings proposed by other organizations
- Information on the registration authority has been updated
- Minimum size of the RFID Emblem has been modified to match industry needs and constraints
