What is DD CEN/TS 15679 – Definitions and characteristics of thermal modified timber about?
DD CEN/TS 15679 focuses on timber in joinery. The aim of the BS EN 942 is to provide manufacturers with requirements for the evaluation of their products that helps in grading timber for joinery.
DD CEN/TS 15679 gives definitions and characteristics for Thermally Modified Timber. TMT is used in interior (dry, humid) and exterior conditions. TMT is usually a semi-finished product; applications are e.g. flooring, panelling, cladding, decking, windows, doors, furniture and other internal and external joinery.
Who is DD CEN/TS 15679 - Definitions and characteristics of thermal modified timber for?
DD CEN/TS 15679 on thermal modified timber is useful for:
- Thermal modified timber manufacturers
- Thermal modified timber suppliers
- Testing laborities
- Quality control and regulatory authorities
- Architectures
- Civil engineers
Why should you use DD CEN/TS 15679 - Definitions and characteristics of thermal modified timber?
Thermally modified wood is wood that has been modified by a controlled pyrolysis process of wood being heated (> 180 °C) in absence of oxygen inducing some chemical changes to the chemical structures of cell wall components (lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose) in the wood.
The principal changes on thermal modification of timber - compared with untreated wood – are improved dimensional stability and increased resistance to decay by wood destroying fungi, and in some cases changed colours. Because of altered strength properties comparing to untreated wood, for the use of TMT, it is essential that the relevant requirements of European and national Standards be taken into consideration.
DD CEN/TS 15679 provides characteristics that need to be assessed after the treatment of timber as different characteristics are relevant in different end uses. This will help users to choose the right product based on their usage requirements. DD CEN/TS 15679 provides the test method of TMT. This will help to ensure that the TMT is resistant to attack from wood destroying fungi and can sustain the load applied to timber which ensures the durability of TMT.
DD CEN/TS 15679 provides methods for type testing that helps you to determine if your product complies with the requirements of the technical specification and that the performance declarations represent the true behaviour of the product.
DD CEN/TS 15679 provides methods for factory production control that helps you to check the performance declarations of your product based on initial type testing so that the results remain valid for subsequent products. DD CEN/TS 15679 shall establish document and maintain a factory production control system to ensure that products placed on the market conform to the declared values or classes of the characteristics. DD CEN/TS 15679 also helps the suppliers to ensure that the performances declared by different manufacturers for a certain characteristic are reliable and truly comparable.
