What is PAS 1884 - Safety operators in automated vehicle testing about?
The latest in a series of standards supporting the development of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) in the UK, PAS 1884 on safety operators in automated vehicle testing gives guidance on the responsibilities, competencies, and training of safety drivers engaged in automated vehicle trialling and developmental testing.
Who is PAS 1884 - Safety operators in automated vehicle testing for?
PAS 1884 on safety operators in automated vehicle testing is for any trialling organization training or using safety operators
PAS 1884 might also be of interest to:
- Safety operators
- Road authorities
- Local authorities
- Testbeds
- Vehicle agencies
- Insurers
- Legal organizations
What does PAS 1884 - Safety operators in automated vehicle testing cover?
PAS 1884 on safety operators in automated vehicle testing gives guidance to organizations that use safety operators either inside the subject vehicle or outside it with the subject vehicle always remaining insight on:
- Responsibilities of the trialling organization and safety operator
- Safety operator selection, fitness to drive, and prior experience
- Training of the safety operator on:
- General skills and knowledge required to drive the base subject vehicle
- Test or trial-specific topics
- Visual line of sight remote operation
- Expected subject vehicle behaviour and unexpected subject vehicle behaviour
- The subject vehicle’s relevant operational design domain (ODD) and its attributes
- The test or trial route
- Eligibility criteria and abort criteria
- Hazards and mitigations
- Safety protocols
- Handover points
- Safety and welfare of passengers
- Management of freight
- Safety operator skills testing and refresher training
- Training and performance records
PAS 1884 applies to both trials and developmental testing, including trials of prototype vehicles, passenger and freight carrying services on both public and private roads or land, as bound by and proportionate to the relevant ODD.
It includes monitoring of safety drivers by the responsible organization and guidance for current and near-term use of safety drivers, but also aims to provide guidance for future developments for the role of the safety driver as CAV technology develops, e.g. changes to the driving task in vehicles with non-conventional controls.
NOTE: PAS 1884 is for use with the related BSI PAS series (1880, 1881, 1882, 1883, BSI Flex 1890) and the CCAV/DfT Code of Practice.
Why should you use PAS 1884 - Safety operators in automated vehicle testing?
PAS 1884 on safety operators in automated vehicle testing provides a standardized approach to safety operator selection, training, and monitoring which is critical to ensuring a consistent level of safety
It’s part of a broader CAV program of standards led by BSI and supported by The Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV). It also aligns with the CCAV/DfT Code of Practice which includes guidance for safe driver and operator requirements
Its use can help accelerate the UK’s delivery of safe and secure CAV technologies and meet the increasing demand to develop safe automated vehicles
PAS 1884 on safety operators in automated vehicle testing can also develop users’ expertise and efficiency, increase confidence in their work and strengthen their risk management
PAS 1884 contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal 9 on the industry, innovation, and infrastructure.
PAS 1884 forms part of a broader CAV programme of the standards led by BSI, find out more about the programme here
