What is PAS 1892 - Connected and automated plant (CAP) about?
The use of connected and automated plant (CAP) in construction provides many opportunities to improve productivity, efficiency, and quality, as well as worker safety and welfare. To accelerate its successful adoption, PAS 1892:2023 provides a common specification framework so that CAP procurement requirements are clearly defined and understood.
Who is PAS 1892 - Connected and automated plant (CAP) for?
-
appointing and appointed parties specifying CAP systems in construction and maintenance work including building owners and managers; developers; all types of construction and plant organizations;
-
related manufacturers;
-
related designers;
-
related researchers.
What does PAS 1892 - Connected and automated plant (CAP) cover?
It provides requirements and a common framework for defining and specifying connected and automated plant (CAP) and their associated systems and connectivity for the purpose of procurement and deployment.
It covers the procurement of CAP within the work site boundary for the purpose of construction and maintenance works and provides a taxonomy for defining and specifying performance requirements for CAP.
PAS 1892:2023 also covers:
- setting objectives including consideration of specific outcomes to be achieved through the deployment of CAP, including safety, quality and operational efficiency;
- establishing requirements for capabilities of CAP and associated systems including levels of performance;
- a taxonomy for describing levels of automation, including the division of roles between system and human;
- development of the safety case and security.
NOTE: PAS 1892:2023 does not cover CAP operations outside of the site boundary or CAP that is being utilized as part of offsite processes. This PAS does not apply to CAP operating within the public realm, for example deliveries, transits on public highways or other uncontrolled environments.
Why should you use PAS 1892 - Connected and automated plant (CAP)?
-
It can help you save money. PAS 1892:2023 supports the use of CAP, which because it works tirelessly can improve productivity and efficiency and can contribute to projects staying on schedule so contractors can avoid overrun penalties. Once implemented, CAP also reduces labour costs.
-
It can improve construction quality. CAP tends to drive greater precision and the elimination of human errors. This results in reduced rework and complaints, higher customer- and end-user satisfaction, and a greater likelihood of doing repeat business.
-
It can help tackle the shortage of skilled labour because CAP is not labour-intensive.
-
It can improve the safety and welfare of construction workers. PAS 1892:2023 supports the use of CAP which uses cameras and sensors to detect potential hazards and prevent accidents. Plant also operates in a more controlled and predictable manner. The net result is fewer lost time incidents, higher morale, and strengthened risk management.
-
It can help your business enter new markets. As CAP is adopted more widely, use of the standard gives you more competence and expertise with CAP and therefore more opportunities to enter new markets.
-
It contributes to more CAP adoption and innovation. PAS 1892:2023 can give appointing and appointed parties more confidence in the use of CAP, accelerating its adoption and the likelihood that beneficial innovations evolve.
-
It contributes to more sustainable construction. CAP leads to consistently higher accuracy and precision, improved resource allocation, less rework, and less wastage, all of which is more sustainable.
-
It enhances trust and your reputation. Being conversant and competent with CAP will let existing and prospective clients know your construction organization is progressive and quick to adopt valuable emerging technologies. This can build confidence in your business and burnish your reputation.

It’s the future. The UK Government Construction Playbook (2020) is driving contracting authorities to adopt modern methods of construction and the supply chain to adopt digital, automated processes. The UK Government Consultancy Playbook (2021) advocates the move to more outcome-based specifications in order to give suppliers the flexibility to propose innovative solutions. The CAP Roadmap (2020, jointly developed by National Highways (formerly Highways England), i3P and TRL), calls for the adoption of CAP as business-as-usual by 2035.
