What is PAS 1918 - Total productive maintenance about?
Total productive maintenance (TPM) is a maintenance system for maximizing production efficiency. It’s a technique that originated in Japan; was initially adopted by industries supplying the automotive sector; and has now been adopted globally across many different manufacturing industries.
PAS 1918 is a new standard document that gives clear, authoritative guidance on how to implement TPM correctly.
Who is PAS 1918 - Total productive maintenance for?
Any organization in the discrete parts manufacturing and process industries. Users will be those responsible for:
- The operation and/or maintenance of plant and equipment
- Health and safety
- The manufacturing department
- The quality department
- The maintenance department
- The production department
- The supply chain
What does PAS 1918 - Total productive maintenance cover?
PAS 1918 gives guidance on the concept of total productive maintenance (TPM) and the key performance indicators (KPIs) that are relevant to implementing it. Guidance is provided on TPM for manufacturing plants and equipment.
TPM aims to:
- Create a corporate system that maximizes the efficiency of the production system (overall efficiency improvement)
- Create systems for preventing the occurrence of all losses on the front line: including systems for realizing zero accidents, zero defects and zero failures over the whole lifecycle of the production system
- Achieve zero losses through overlapping small group activities
As set out in PAS 1918, TPM can be applied in all areas, including the production, development and administration departments and is based on the participation of all members, ranging from the top management to front line employees.
NOTE: PAS 1918 sets out the basics of TPM as described in IATF 16949 for companies seeking IATF (International Automotive Task Force) certification and does not preclude the expansion of the scope of application or the introduction of new technologies based on these basics. It does not cover specific issues with the lean manufacturing method and just-in-time (JIT) or total quality control (TQC). Why should you use PAS 1918 - Total productive maintenance?
- It was written in consultation with the JIPM Corporation, co-creators of the original TPM model
- It will help organizations adopt a consistent and standardized approach to TPM and to implement it correctly, which in turn can improve productivity
