What is PAS 4441:2024 about?
PAS 4441:2024, supported by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, is a key component of the Hydrogen Skills and Standards for Heat programme. This programme aims to repurpose the existing natural gas system for use with 100% hydrogen downstream of the emergency control valve (ECV).
Falling under the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP) and Clean Heat Directorate – Hydrogen Heating, it aims to provide evidence that will inform strategic decisions in 2026 regarding the role of hydrogen in heat decarbonization.
What does PAS 4441:2024 cover?
PAS 4441:2024 specifies performance requirements for components used in and around the hydrogen gas meter. It covers meters and any excess flow value (EFV), or device with EFV functionality, and other associated equipment, e.g. meter box and pliable connections supplied for use with hydrogen.
It also specifies the performance requirements for each component associated with meter installation to ascertain its safety.
Key topics include:
-
Hydrogen gas characteristics, category, and supply pressures.
-
Components such as emergency control valve (ECV) and gas filter.
-
Meter including flows not exceeding a nominal 20 m³/h (domestic) and flows more than 20 m³/h.
-
Electronic gas volume conversion systems.
-
Marking and instructions.
Who is PAS 4441:2024 for?
This PAS is for use by the manufacturers of hydrogen-fired gas and gas appliances.
It may also be of interest to:
-
Safety standards personnel
-
Test houses
-
Approved bodies (UK) and notified bodies (EU)
-
Consultants
-
Gas distribution network operators (GDNOs)
-
Gas suppliers and shippers
-
Code bodies
-
Meter equipment managers
-
Government bodies and regulators
Architects, property developers, builders, mechanical and electrical contractors, Gas Safe registered installers and surveyors, and other associated gas equipment manufacturers may also find it relevant.
This PAS is intended for use in England, Scotland and Wales but can be used internationally under local gas regulations.
