What is PAS 4445:2025 Hydrogen-fired equipment for use in industrial and commercial (non-domestic) settings – Code of Practice about?
To support decarbonization, PAS 4445:2025 gives recommendations on the design, construction and performance of large equipment which is either purpose built to use hydrogen or designed to be converted to hydrogen.
Who is PAS 4445:2025 Hydrogen-fired equipment for use in industrial and commercial (non-domestic) settings – Code of Practice for?
• OEMs and designers of large hydrogen-fired equipment;
• installers of large hydrogen-fired equipment;
• commissioning and maintenance engineers of large hydrogen-fired equipment;
• notified bodies;
• insurers/underwriters;
• UK competent authorities
What does PAS 4445:2025 Hydrogen-fired equipment for use in industrial and commercial (non-domestic) settings – Code of Practice cover?
PAS 4445:2025 gives recommendations for large hydrogen-fired equipment for use in industrial and commercial (non-domestic) settings.
It covers the safety, design, construction, testing and performance of large hydrogen-fired equipment for use in industrial and commercial (non-domestic) settings which are either:
• manufacturer-purpose built;
• manufacturer-converted; or
• retrofit-converted to use hydrogen.
PAS 4445:2025 covers pre-conversion, the conversion procedure, and post-conversion processes and applies to:
• equipment with an input power rating exceeding 70 kW; and
• gas pressure systems with a maximum operational gas pressure of 7 bar downstream from the first stage pressure reduction.
Why should you use PAS 4445:2025 Hydrogen-fired equipment for use in industrial and commercial (non-domestic) settings – Code of Practice?
• Supports safety: PAS 4445 provides clear, streamlined guidance for industry that deals with the specific characteristics and risks of hydrogen, affirming proven technology; ensuring safe design and operation; protecting workers, facilities and the environment; and minimizing liability.
• Enables reliable testing and performance: PAS 4445 sets out clear protocols for testing equipment so it meets required safety and performance benchmarks. It ensures that both new and retrofitted equipment handles the operational demands of hydrogen efficiently, it reduces operational maintenance costs and the risk of breakdowns and downtime, and it provides users with a route to a recognized certification.
• Aligns the market: PAS 4445 enables collaboration and compatibility, and gives end-users confidence that safe, fast and relatively cheap fuel-switching to hydrogen is possible for large industrial gas fired equipment.
• Supports decarbonization: By giving guidance on retrofitting equipment for hydrogen use, PAS 4445 lowers the cost and technical barriers of conversion, supports the decarbonization of emissions, and accelerates the transition to a sustainable energy solution.
• Promotes innovation: PAS 4445 can help reassure investors, regulators and other stakeholders about the safety and reliability of hydrogen equipment, as well as providing a framework for innovative new designs.
