What is PAS 6011:2020 about?
This is the second of three PASs written to increase the understanding and confident use of directed energy deposition (DED) additive manufacturing (AM): a type of industrial 3D printing in metal. PAS 6011:2020 is a guide to the non-destructive testing of DED manufactured parts.
Who is PAS 6011:2020 for?
- Anyone wanting to identify suitable methods of inspection of parts manufactured using a DED AM process. This PAS is particularly useful in the military, aerospace, automotive and rail transport sectors where DED technologies have shown potential
- Regulatory bodies
- Material suppliers
- Certification bodes and inspectors
- Researchers
Why should you use PAS 6011:2020?
This PAS lists the non-destructive testing (NDT) technologies that can be used to qualify the performance of DED manufactured parts. It provides guidance on NDT for use in DED AM processes and covers:
- Typical causes and nature of defects
- Review of other potentially relevant standards (welding)
- Review of NDT methods capability for DED AM
- Emerging NDT with potential for DED AM
- Shortlist NDT methods with potential for validation trials
The NDT technologies include those currently in use and in the early stages of gaining wider acceptance, and technologies that are still in last stage development. It provides guidance on the range of applicability, and on the advantages and limitations of each technology based on the type of parts being tested.
PAS 6011:2020 will benefit DED users and NDT producers by providing a concise reference guide and technology selection matrix. This should speed up the application of NDT generally but also encourage users to adopt newer methods which, while more complex, offer greater insight and faster throughput.
NOTE: This PAS does not cover NDT during DED AM builds and NDT trials, or other AM processes. Nor does it purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
