What is PAS 7062 - Electric vehicle battery cells about?
There’s growing demand for battery storage, with the market estimated to be worth £8 billion to the UK and £50 billion to Europe by 2025. PAS 7062:2021 covers the manufacturing of electrodes and cells for many applications, specifically with a focus on electrically propelled vehicles, including electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles. The PAS includes recommendations for the quality, safety and environmentally-conscious handling and management of materials, components and cells throughout the manufacturing processes, before being assembled into a module or pack.
Who is PAS 7062 - Electric vehicle battery cells for?
- Manufacturers of electrochemical cells, supercapacitor, lithium-ion batteries or similar or next generation cell technologies
- Technology developers for new battery chemistry innovations
- Battery cell users
- Possible chemical suppliers
- Automotive manufacturers and the associated supply chain
Why should you use PAS 7062 - Electric vehicle battery cells?
This PAS gives recommendations on health and safety, fire and environmental performance, and quality management in the manufacture of battery cells – such as the lithium-ion liquid electrolyte cells – for electrically-propelled vehicles (EVs).
It establishes a common understanding and approach to EV battery cell manufacture and use. EV refers to any electrically assisted propelled vehicle, for example: plug-in hybrid, hybrid and full electric. The PAS covers:
- Sourcing
- Storing and handling material, traceability
- Assembly
- Chemical management (occupational health, personnel safety)
- Hazards and environmental conditions (solvents, people)
- Competency
- Test methods and conformity
- Formation of cell and fire hazards
- Storage, handling and transport of completed cell
- Clean rooms and dry rooms
- End of life consideration
- Waste handling
- Environmental impact
PAS 7062:2021 provides an overview of good practice that can help industry save time and resources, and build UK knowledge to manage risk in a new manufacturing sector, ensuring the UK can continue to influence and manufacture exports to international markets. In addition, its use will help organizations:
- Accelerate innovation
- Develop their expertise
- Facilitate change
- Grow sustainably
- Increase trust in their products and services
- Better manage risk
NOTE 1: This PAS does not cover performance requirements for the individual chemicals and materials. It also does not cover the general risks associated with manufacturing processes such as slips, trips and falls, or any risks covered by the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.
PAS 7062 forms part of the Faraday Battery Challenge programme led by BSI, find out more about the programme here
