What is PD CEN/TS 17196 - Aqua regia digestible content of construction products about?
PD CEN/TS 17196 is the international standard on construction products that concerns the aqua regia digestible content by analysis of inorganic substances.
PD CEN/TS 17196 specifies methods for obtaining the aqua regia digestible content of construction products.
Solutions produced by this method are for analysis by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and inductively coupled spectrometry (ICP-OES) for the 67 elements.
Solutions produced by the methods are suitable for analysis by cold vapour atomic absorption or fluorescent spectrometry (CV-AAS, CV-AFS), for mercury (Hg).
Digestion with aqua regia will not necessarily accomplish the total decomposition of the sample.
The extracted analyte concentrations may not necessarily reflect the total content in the sample.
NOTE: The method in PD CEN/TS 17196 is applicable to construction products that include mineral-based products, bituminous products, metals, wood-based products, plastics and rubbers, sealants and adhesives, paints and coatings.
Who is PD CEN/TS 17196 - Aqua regia digestible content of construction products for?
PD CEN/TS 17196 on construction products is useful for:
- Manufacturers of the construction materials
- Builders
- Civil engineers
Why should you use PD CEN/TS 17196 - Aqua regia digestible content of construction products?
Aqua regia is the digestion solution obtained by mixing one volume of concentrated nitric acid and three volumes of concentrated hydrochloric acid.
PD CEN/TS 17196 gives the test methods to acquire the aqua regia digestible content of construction products.
Interferences and sources of errors are provided in PD CEN/TS 17196 as high acid and solute concentrations in the digest may cause interferences at the determination.
PD CEN/TS 17196 navigates you through the apparatus requirements and reagents used for recognized analytical grade to avoid high blank values for subsequent analytical measurements.
PD CEN/TS 17196 provides the test procedure to determine aqua regia digestible content by:
- Method A: Thermal heating under reflux conditions
- Method B: Microwave heating with temperature control at 170 °C – 180 °C
PD CEN/TS 17196 gives the resulting typical values for repeatability and reproducibility limits as the observed ranges.
With PD CEN/TS 17196 you can illustrate the potential for greater sustainability and healthier products for your buildings as manufacturers can reduce or remove problem chemicals quickly without compromising the performance and aesthetics of the building material. In this way, you could improve building indoor air quality while minimising harmful effects on human health and the environment.
