What is PD CEN/TS 17286 about?
PD CEN/TS 17286 is an international standard that covers the features of stationary source emissions.
PD CEN/TS 17286 specifies the performance characteristics to evaluate the acceptability of sorbent trap monitoring systems used to monitor the total vapor-phase mercury (Hg) emissions in stationary source flue gas streams. These monitoring systems involve continuous repetitive in-flue sampling using paired sorbent traps with subsequent analysis of the time-integrated samples.
PD CEN/TS 17286 is suitable for both short-term (periodic) measurements and long-term (continuous) monitoring using sorbent traps. The operator of the industrial installation is responsible for the correct calibration, maintenance, and operation of this long-term sampling system.
PD CEN/TS 17286 discusses measuring equipment, sorbent trap monitoring system equipment specifications, monitoring system, moisture removal device, vacuum pump, total sample volume measurement, sample flow rate meter, and controller, temperature sensor, absolute pressure sensor, automatic controller, sample preparation, sample analysis equipment, and sorbent trap spiking system.
Who is PD CEN/TS 17286 for?
PD CEN/TS 17286 on stationary source emissions is useful for:
- Monitoring solutions companies
- Manufacturers of mercury monitoring traps
- Suppliers and distributors of mercury monitoring traps
- Laboratories measuring mercury
Why should you use PD CEN/TS 17286?
Known volumes of the flue gas are continuously extracted from a flue or duct through paired, in-flue, pre-spiked three-section sorbent traps at appropriate nominal flow rates. The sorbent traps in the sampling system are periodically exchanged with new ones, prepared for analysis as needed, and analyzed by any technique that can meet the analytical performance criteria. Mercury sorbent trap is a tube filled with a collection material on which gaseous mercury is collected to measure the sum of mercury in the exhaust gas independent from the state (gaseous, dissolved in droplets, solid, within particles, etc.,).
PD CEN/TS 17286 aims to establish the performance benchmarks for collecting the mercury and to evaluate the acceptability of sorbent trap monitoring systems used to monitor total vapour-phase mercury (Hg) emissions in stationary source flue gas streams.
PD CEN/TS 17286 measures the substance that is the total vapour phase mercury in the flue gas, which represents the sum of the elemental mercury (Hg0) and gaseous forms of oxidized mercury (Hg2+), such as mercury (II) chloride, in mass concentration units of micrograms (μg) per dry meter cubed (m3). It has an analytical range of 0.1 to greater than 50 μg/m3.
PD CEN/TS 17286 also contains routine procedures and specifications that are designed to help the users to evaluate the ongoing performance of an installed sorbent trap monitoring system.
