What is PD IEC/TS 61850-80-4- Communication networks and systems for power utility automation about?
PD IEC/TS 61850-80-4 is a safety standard on communication networks and systems for power utility automation.
Included within the IEC 61850 power utility automation architecture are its concepts, data models, communication protocols, and the mapping data exchanges on the substation network. This extends beyond just IEDs to other IEC 61850 enabled devices like meters, system applications, and remote access gateways.
PD IEC/TS 61850-80-4, which is a technical specification, considers the requirements of power utility automation applications, i.e., the scope is limited by the use cases relevant for meter data exchange in HV/MV substations and MV/LV substations. Only use cases that require the data exchange involving a revenue meter are considered.
Note: Applications not covered by the existing standards listed in Clause 2 are out of scope.
Who is PD IEC/TS 61850-80-4- Communication networks and systems for power utility automation for?
PD IEC/TS 61850-80-4 on the translation from the COSEM object model is relevant to:
- System developers
- Manufacturers of energy metering equipment
- Testing authorities
- Manufacturers of network components and end devices
- Electrical engineers
- Electricians
Why should you use PD IEC/TS 61850-80-4- Communication networks and systems for power utility automation?
A subset of IEC 61850 covers communication networks and systems for power utility automation, including SCADA for distributed energy resources.
When all of the following subsystems are merged, IEC 61850 describes the communication architecture for overall power system management. The power grid's gadgets are getting more intelligent, requiring more data to be processed in a dispersed setting. Because complete data models may be reused, they greatly simplify data processing and management. PD IEC/TS 61850-80-4 establishes the 1:1 connection of IEC 62056 OBIS codes to IEC 61850 Logical Nodes. The goal is to make revenue metre data more accessible to other IEC 61850 applications. This greater visibility will help smart grid applications gather data. Defining these relationships also helps in the design of protocol converters. We can construct test cases and end-user knowledge of amounts with a precise specification. Finally, restricting translation possibilities simplifies end-user settings.
Overall, PD IEC/TS 61850-80-4 is helpful as it provides guidance on defining a number of standardized hierarchical names, it can drastically reduce errors in the field. The names in the standard can be directly used for the configuration of devices and the communication between devices.
