What is PD IEC TS 62257-8-1- Selection of batteries and battery management systems about?
IEC 62257 series covers recommendations for renewable energy and hybrid systems for rural electrification and provides best industry guidance and strategies for different players involved in rural electrification projects, for the setting up of renewable energy and hybrid systems with AC voltage below 1 000 V and DC voltage below 1 500 V. One of the main objectives is to provide the minimum sufficient requirements relevant to the field of application that is: small renewable energy and hybrid off-grid systems.
PD IEC TS 62257-8-1 is the 8th part in the series that proposes simple, cheap, comparative tests in order to discriminate easily, in a panel of automotive flooded lead-acid batteries, the most acceptable model for PV individual rural electrification systems.
The tests provided in PD IEC TS 62257-8-1 allow assessment of the batteries' performances according to the general specification of the project and batteries associated with their battery management system (BMS) in a short time and with common technical means. They can be performed locally, as close as possible to the operating conditions of the real site.
Who is PD IEC TS 62257-8-1- Selection of batteries and battery management systems for?
PD IEC TS 62257-8-1 on renewable energy and hybrid systems for rural electrification is useful to:
- Rural project planning authorities
- Project implementers, contractors and supervisors
- Electric power distribution companies
- Electric power stations
- Installers
- Accredited laboratories
- Local authorities
Why should you use PD IEC TS 62257-8-1-Selection of batteries and battery management systems?
Photovoltaic hybrid power systems are gaining attraction as a means for rural electrification given rising prices of conventional fuel, lower operating costs, and improved service quality as compared to traditional single-source generating systems. The purpose of PD IEC TS 62257-8-1 is to propose tests for automotive lead-acid batteries and battery management systems used in small PV individual electrification systems.
PD IEC TS 62257-8-1 is useful for project implementers to test in laboratories of developing countries, the capability of locally made car or truck batteries can be used for rural electrification projects.
PD IEC TS 62257-8-1 provides recommendations to:
- Choose the right system for the right place
- Design the system
- Operate and maintain the system
PD IEC TS 62257-8-1 also specifies the regulations and installation requirements that, if met, can ensure the life and proper operation of the installations, as well as the safety of people living in proximity to the installation.
What’s changed since the last update?
PD IEC TS 62257-8-1:2018 supersedes DD IEC/TS 62257‑8‑1:2007, which is withdrawn. PD IEC TS 62257-8-1:2018 has been technically revised and contains the following changes:
- The required support cannot be obtained for the publication of an International Standard, despite repeated efforts
- The subject is still under technical development or where, for any other reason, there is the future but no immediate possibility of an agreement on an International Standard
