What is PD IEC TS 62600-301- River energy converters about?
PD IEC TS 62600 is a standard that discusses marine energy including wave, tidal and other water current converters.
PD IEC TS 62600-301 is the 301th part of the multi-series that specifies methodologies that will ensure consistency and accuracy in the estimation, measurement, characterization, and analysis of the river-velocity resource at sites that could be suitable for the installation of an individual or array of River Energy Converters (RECs). It also provides:
- Methodologies for producing a standard current speed distribution based on measured, historical, or numerical data, or a combination thereof, to be used in conjunction with an appropriate river energy power performance assessment
- Allowable data collection methods and/or modelling techniques
- A framework for reporting results
The overall goal of the methodology is to enable calculation of the Annual Energy Production (AEP) for the proposed individual or array of river energy converters either as part of a feasibility study (generic river energy converter) or a full study.
PD IEC TS 62600-301 explicitly excludes:
- Technical or practical resource assessments
- Resource characterization
- Power performance assessment of river energy converters
- Environmental impact studies, assessments, or similar
Who is PD IEC TS 62600-301- River energy converters for?
PD IEC TS 62600-301 on RECs is relevant to:
- Manufacturers of REC
- Manufacturers of water turbines
- Manufacturers of marine renewable energy installations
- Water transport engineering component manufacturers
- Marine transportation
- Companies involved in hydraulic energy engineering
- Regulatory bodies
Why should you use PD IEC TS 62600-301- River energy converters?
River current energy converters are electromechanical energy converters that convert river water's kinetic energy into other forms of usable energy. The river-velocity resource of these converters must be analysed in order to improve their performance.
The purpose of PD IEC TS 62600-301 is to provide a uniform methodology that will ensure consistency and accuracy in the estimation, measurement, characterisation, and analysis of the river-velocity resource at sites that could be suitable for the installation of an individual or array of RECs, together with defining a standardised methodology with which this resource can be described and reported. Application of the estimation, measurement, and analysis techniques recommended in PD IEC TS 62600-301 will ensure that resource assessment is undertaken in a consistent and equitable manner. PD IEC TS 62600-301 presents techniques that are expected to provide fair and suitably accurate results that can be replicated by others. PD IEC TS 62600-301 is intended to be updated as understanding of the resource and its response to power extraction improves.
