What is ISO/IEC TS 20748‑3 about?
Learning analytics are used to collect, explore and analyze diverse types and interrelationships of data, such as learner interaction data related to usage of digital resources, teaching and learning activity logs, learning outcomes and structured data about programmes, curriculum and associated competencies.
ISO/IEC TS 20748‑3 specifies guidelines for mapping between different learning analytics data representations. Using xAPI and IMS Caliper as reference specifications, this document introduces data API regarding learning analytics as well as guidelines to use the APIs, which can be generalized to other contexts.
ISO/IEC TS 20748‑3 describes caliper information model which defines a set of concepts, rules and relationships for describing learning activities. The Caliper information model also defines a number of metric profiles, each of which models a learning activity or a supporting activity that helps facilitate learning.
ISO/IEC TS 20748‑3 supports teachers and learners, institution, curriculum developers, content providers, device vendors for learning analytics applications.
Who is ISO/IEC TS 20748‑3 for?
ISO/IEC TS 20748‑3 on learning analytics interoperability is useful for:
- Curriculum developers
- Educational trainers
- Learning management systems
- Institutions that provide content
- Organizations involved in creation of education materials
Why should you use ISO/IEC TS 20748‑3?
The increasing amount of data being generated from learning environments provides new opportunities to support learning, education and training (LET) in new ways through learning analytics. Learning analytics raise new interoperability challenges related to data sharing, privacy, trust and control of data, quality of service.
ISO/IEC TS 20748‑3 gives you conceptual description of the behaviour of components related to learning analytics interoperability. This document also provides you with learning activity data interoperability which focuses on xAPI and IMS Caliper for the learning analytics process and interoperability.
ISO/IEC TS 20748‑3 focuses on guidelines for data collection process for data interoperability. Learning and teaching activities provide sources for data collection and subsequent processes of the learning analytics workflow.
