What is ISO/PAS 13473‑6 about?
ISO/PAS 13473‑6 is the sixth part of the multi-series of the document that is applicable to the characterization of pavement texture by use of surface profiles.
ISO/PAS 13473‑6 describes methods for checking laser profilometer performance with respect to the capability of such equipment in measuring pavement texture. Modern profilometers in use for measurements on pavements are almost entirely of the contactless type (such as laser point or line triangulation) designed for two- or three-dimensional measurements and ISO/PAS 13473‑6 is intended for evaluating the performance of this type of profilometers.
Who is ISO/PAS 13473‑6 for?
ISO/PAS 13473‑6 on pavement texture is relevant to:
- Manufacturers and suppliers of profilometers
- Manufacturers and suppliers of road construction materials
- Civil engineers
- Construction industry
Why should you use ISO/PAS 13473‑6?
Pavement texture is an important pavement surface property that influences friction, noise, smoothness, and other factors. Wavelengths are frequently used to classify texture (the length between physically repeating features). A pavement surface is frequently made up of a variety of wavelengths of varying sizes. These surface textures are added to concrete pavements during road building to enhance friction and skid resistance, which are especially important in rainy weather.
Pavement texture data is frequently utilised in studies and surveys of pavement surface attributes such as tyre/road noise, rolling resistance, skid resistance, and splash and spray.
ISO/PAS 13473‑6 includes guidelines and recommendations intended to assist users of laser profilometers in the verification of their equipment.
ISO/PAS 13473‑6 aims at providing tools for verifying that such systems perform satisfactorily in all respects important for the correct measurements of texture, as well as to detect when and in what way the performance is unsatisfactory. It also provides some general information about the limitations and trade-offs of laser profilometer systems.
Moreover, ISO/PAS 13473‑6 specifies how you can verify that a particular device meets the intended characteristics of laser profilometer systems used for pavement texture measurements, addressing the challenge of incompetent equipment.
The objective of this document is to make available an internationally accepted procedure by which performance of various laser-based equipment for pavement texture measurements can be evaluated.
