What is ISO/PAS 21448 about?
ISO/PAS 21448 is an international standard on road vehicles that discusses functional safety.
ISO/PAS 21448 provides guidance on the applicable design, verification, and validation measures needed to achieve the Safety Of The Intended Functionality (SOTIF).
ISO/PAS 21448 is intended to be applied to intended functionality where proper situational awareness is critical to safety, and where that situational awareness is derived from complex sensors and processing algorithms; especially emergency intervention systems (e.g., emergency braking systems) and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
NOTE: ISO/PAS 21448 does not apply to faults covered by the ISO 26262 series or to hazards directly caused by the system technology (e.g., eye damage from a laser sensor).
NOTE: ISO/PAS 21448 is not intended for functions of existing systems for which well-established and well-trusted design, verification, and validation (V&V) measures exist at the time of publication (e.g., Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) systems, airbag, etc.).
Who is ISO/PAS 21448 for?
ISO/PAS 21448 on road vehicles safety functionality is useful for:
- Mechanical engineers
- Software engineers
- Electrical equipment safety engineers
Why should you use ISO/PAS 21448?
The safety of road vehicles during their operation phase is of paramount concern for the road vehicles industry. Compliance to ISO/PAS 21448 an overview of this document’s activities in the development process is specified.
Functional and system specification of intended functionality content is also provided in ISO/PAS 21448 to initiate the SOTIF related activities.
Systematic identification and evaluation of hazards caused by the intended functionality can be achieved through ISO/PAS 21448.
Identification and Evaluation of triggering events are specified in ISO/PAS 21448 to identify the system weaknesses (including those of its sensors, algorithms, actuators) and the related scenarios that could lead to an identified hazard.
The development activities of the functional modifications to reduce the SOTIF related risks is achieved through ISO/PAS 21448.
Overall, ISO/PAS 21448 guides you in achieving a proper understanding of the functions of road vehicles, its behaviour, and its limitations (including the human/machine interface) to ensure safety.
