What is ISO/TS 19857 about?
ISO/TS 19857 is a standard that serves technical specifications for a laboratory test method for offset ink setting that determines the printability of paper, board and printing inks which prevents ink sets-off, bad adhesion and uneven toning.
ISO/TS 19857 describes a laboratory test method, using an IGT type or a prüfbau type printability tester for preparation of specimens to evaluate the absorption rate of an ink on a substrate in offset lithography by setting-off the printed surface to an unprinted surface.
The method described in ISO/TS 19857 gives testing with an amount of ink simulating either single color or multi-color printing. The print and the set-off print (counter print) are made with interval times, between print and set-off, common for the target process.
Who is ISO/TS 19857 for?
ISO/TS 19857 on laboratory test method for offset ink setting applies to:
- Paper mills and manufacturers
- Distributors, dealers and importers of paper and board
- Ink manufacturers and distributors
- Testing houses for papers
Why should you use ISO/TS 19857?
The absorption properties of the paper are of great influence in offset lithography printing. Inappropriate absorption can lead to numerous printing problems such as ink set-off, bad adhesion, mottling, unpredictable tone value increase, poor rub resistance, damaging of first printed side on perfecting presses after perfecting and others.
ISO/TS 19857 shows you the test method to evaluate the ink setting characteristics of a specific ink/substrate combination in offset lithographic printing which allows you to enhance the quality of paper and boards.
ISO/TS 19857 gives detailed specifications for a laboratory test method for offset ink setting such as apparatus, materials, test methods, procedures for assessing the printability of paper.
ISO/TS 19857 gives you information on apparatus and material, test method, procedure and assessment which standardizes the absorption quality of the paper, as it is a great influence in offset lithography printing.
Thus, ISO/TS 19857 helps its users to customize the printability of a paper by verifying the offset ink setting, as the more absorbent the paper is the less time will be needed for the ink to set sufficiently for further processing.
