What is ISO 21569‑3 about?
ISO 21569‑3 is the third part of a series of documents on molecular biomarker analysis. ISO 21569‑3 describes a procedure for the detection of the DNA transition sequence between the 35S promotor (P35S) from the Cauliflower mosaic virus and a modified phoshinothricin-acetyltransferase gene (pat) from Streptomyces viridochromogenes. The P35S-pat construct is frequently found in genetically modified plants with tolerance for phosphinothricin-containing herbicides. The P35S-pat construct-specific method is based on real-time PCR and can be used for qualitative and quantitative screening purposes. A follow-up analysis can be carried out to identify and quantify a specific event.
ISO 21569‑3 applies to the analysis of DNA extracted from foodstuffs. It can also be suitable for the analysis of DNA extracted from other products such as feedstuffs and seeds. The application of this method requires the extraction of an adequate quantity and quality of amplifiable DNA from the relevant matrix.
Who is ISO 21569‑3 for?
ISO 21569‑3 on molecular biomarker analysis is beneficial for
- GMO testing laboratories
- Biotechnologists
- Food technologists
- Food safety and regulatory bodies
Why should you use ISO 21569‑3?
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test qualifies and quantifies genetically modified organisms (GMO) present in food or feed samples.
ISO 21569‑3 provides information on test sample procedure, preparation of the DNA extracts, PCR setup, validation status, and performance criteria for detecting the DNA transition sequence between the 35S promotor (P35S) from Cauliflower mosaic virus and a modified phoshinothricin-acetyltransferase gene (pat) from Streptomyces viridochromogenes.
The method provided by ISO 21569‑3 has been validated in a collaborative study coordinated by the German Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL), and to prepare the samples, certified reference materials produced from the American Oil Chemists’ Society (AOCS, Urbana USA) and the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM, Geel Belgium) were used.
With the necessary guidance and compliance to ISO 21569‑3, you can explore the safety levels of GMO and derived products and consequently avoid cross-contamination risks.
