summary
This SAE standard defines hydrogen fuel quality requirements for commercial PEM fuel cell electric vehicles and fueling stations.
description
SAE J2719â„¢ APR2026 provides background information and specifications for hydrogen fuel used by commercial proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell electric vehicles. It defines hydrogen quality requirements at the fueling station dispenser nozzle, including threshold limits for water, hydrocarbons, oxygen, methane, inert gases, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulfur compounds, formaldehyde, ammonia, halogenated compounds, and particulates. The standard also covers sampling guidance, analytical methods, applicable SAE, ASTM, CSA, EPA, ISO, JSA, NIOSH, and SCAQMD references, definitions, revision guidance, and research supporting the specification. This revision was issued in April 2026 and supersedes SAE J2719 MAR2020.
Application Scope: Commercial hydrogen fueling stations, PEM fuel cell electric vehicles, hydrogen producers and suppliers, fuel quality laboratories, vehicle and fuel cell system developers, regulators, and organizations performing hydrogen sampling and impurity analysis.
