SAE J3227-2026 is a Surface Vehicle Information Report that defines procedures and terminology for measuring, calculating, and reporting percent vehicle overlap in real-world or staged end plane collisions. The document covers front-end overlap and vehicle overlap methods using contact damage length, uncontacted length, end of contact damage length, D dimension, undeformed end width, and overall vehicle width.
It is intended to support consistent crash investigation, crash reconstruction, and crash test reporting where one bumper corner of a case vehicle is engaged but both corners are not. The report was issued in May 2021 and reaffirmed in April 2026 with no technical changes.
Application Scope: Applicable to vehicle crash investigation, staged crash testing, accident reconstruction, and reporting of offset-frontal or rear/front end plane impacts involving vehicle overlap measurements.
