What is BS 6586-1 - Specification for rigid polyurethane foam about?
BS 6586 is a series on rigid polyurethane (PUR) foam produced by the press injection method. Rigid polyurethane foam is a low-density PU system often used in fire retardant parts and insulation panels.
BS 6586-1 specifies requirements for the composition and physical properties of rigid polyurethane foam manufactured by the press injection method for use in the construction of insulated panels for transport containers and insulated vehicle bodies.
Note: BS 6586-1 is not applicable to the in situ insulation of fully constructed transport containers and insulated vehicle bodies.
Who is BS 6586-1 - Specification for rigid polyurethane foam for?
BS 6586-1 on the specification for rigid polyurethane foam is useful for:
- Foam manufacturers
- Research and development facilities
- Quality control personnel
- Design engineers
Why should you use BS 6586-1 - Specification for rigid polyurethane foam?
In certain formulations, we use rigid foam for shoe sole insert components and even helmet liners. The foam panels are designated according to their thermal conductivity. The designation comprises the order presented as the number and date of the British Standard, i.e., BS 6586-1, a double-digit number to indicate the thermal conductivity selected in accordance with BS 6586-1. PUR foam of minimum overall apparent density of 38 kg/m3 is normally found to be suitable for the applications covered by BS 6586-1. Consideration of the fire performance of the finished structure incorporating rigid polyurethane (PUR) foam is relevant to the possible hazard associated with PUR foam. This should be assessed using BS 6336 which gives recommendations on how fire hazards should be considered, considering the design of the end product and any possible risk to which it might be exposed in use.
This method describes a procedure for determining the apparent water absorption of rigid cellular materials resulting from immersion in water under specified conditions of depth and time. The buoyant force of an object less dense than water when submerged is equal to the weight of the water it displaces less the dry weight of the object. Water absorbed by the object reduces the buoyant force by reducing the volume of water displaced. The water absorption is determined by measuring the change of buoyant force. The method described is intended for quality control purposes and does not include corrections for the volume of water in the cut surfaces cells of the test specimen. Using BS 6586-1 specify requirements for the composition and physical properties of rigid polyurethane foam manufactured by the press injection method for use in the construction of insulated panels for transport containers and insulated vehicle bodies.
