What is BS EN 12312-11 - Container/pallet dollies and loose load trailers about?
BS EN 12312-11 is a European Standard that discusses aircraft ground support equipment.
BS EN 12312-11 is the 11th part of the series that specifies the technical requirements to minimize the hazards listed in Clause 4 which can arise during the commissioning, operation, and maintenance of container/pallet dollies and loose load trailers when carried out in accordance with the specifications given by the manufacturer or his authorized representative.
BS EN 12312-11 applies to container/pallet dollies using ball-mat, inverted cargo castors, or rollers and loose load trailers intended to be used for the transportation of baggage and cargo in airports.
Note 1: BS EN 12312-11 does not apply to trailers of similar design as used on public roads, e.g., truck-type trailers.
Note 2: BS EN 12312-11 does not establish requirements for noise and vibration. Noise and vibration are dealt with respectively in EN 1915-4 and EN 1915-3.
Note 3: BS EN 12312-11 is not applicable to container/pallet dollies and loose load trailers which are manufactured before the date of publication by CEN of BS EN 12312-11.
Note 4: Certain measurements have been given in imperial units (in parentheses), following the metric measurements, since the containers/pallets to be handled are based on the imperial system.
Who is BS EN 12312-11 - Container/pallet dollies and loose load trailers for?
BS EN 12312-11 on container/pallet dollies and loose load trailer equipment is useful for:
- Ground support equipment (GSE) manufacturers
- Anyone involved in the commissioning, operating, and maintenance of GSE
- Airlines industry
- Dollies and trailer manufacturers
- Regulatory bodies/compliance authorities
- Design engineers
- Quality control personnel
- Airport authorities
- Regulatory bodies
Why should you use BS EN 12312-11 - Container/pallet dollies and loose load trailers?
The dollies themselves do not carry a load but are used to support a semi-trailer or similar haulage unit. The main types of dollies are Converter and Low-Loader.
BS EN 12312-11 specifies health and safety requirements, as well as some functional and performance requirements for container/pallet dollies and loose load trailers intended for moving unit load devices (ULD), loose freight, mail, and baggage at an airport.
The minimum essential criteria are of primary importance in providing safe, serviceable, economical, and practical container/pallet dollies and loose load trailers. Deviations from the recommended criteria should occur only after careful consideration, extensive testing, risk assessment, and thorough service evaluation have shown alternative methods or conditions to be satisfactory.
The machinery concerned and the extent to which hazards, hazardous situations, and events are covered are indicated in the scope of BS EN 12312-11.
BS EN 12312-11 also considers some performance requirements recognized as essential by authorities, aircraft and GSE manufacturers as well as airlines and handling agencies.
When used at the design stage, BS EN 12312-11 lets you mitigate potential risks at the beginning of the process. As a quality control personnel of maintenance or service platforms and steerings, you can refer to the guidelines in BS EN 12312-11 to comply with safety regulations.
BS EN 12312-11 provides best industry requirements for maintenance platforms and steering as well.
Thus, BS EN 12312-11 is your guide on ensuring container/pallet dollies and loose load trailers are safe and reliable for use.
