What is BS EN 1431 - Residual binder and oil distillate about?
BS EN 1431 is the European standard on bitumen and bituminous binders that discusses bitumen emulsions properties by distillation.
BS EN 1431 specifies a method for the quantitative determination of residual binder and oil distillate in bituminous emulsions.
NOTE: The method can also be used to obtain residue and oil distillate for further testing.
Who is BS EN 1431 - Residual binder and oil distillate for?
BS EN 1431 on bituminous binder is useful for:
- Builders
- Civil engineers
- Manufacturers of bituminous materials
Why should you use BS EN 1431 - Residual binder and oil distillate?
The bituminous binder is a material used to hold solid particles together, for example, bitumen or tar that is the most widely used construction material.
BS EN 1431 provides the apparatus requirements, reagents and materials to test water and oil content that is distilled from the bituminous emulsion.
The laboratory sample and test procedure of the residual binder are described in BS EN 1431 when using a gas ring burner and when using electrical heating.
BS EN 1431 specifies the calculating method of the residual binder after distillation and expresses the content as a mass percentage.
Overall, BS EN 1431 assist you in manufacturing high-quality bituminous binder. BS EN 1431 enables you to determine water and oil distillate to ensure the quality of the bitumen used as a binder by giving a measure of fluidity at a particular temperature. In this way, you can utilise a bituminous binder for your building ensuring the performance parameters such as the adhesion, rheology, durability and application temperatures of bitumen.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN 1431:2018 supersedes BS EN 1431:2009. BS EN 1431:2018 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 1431:2009. These include:
- Alternative basic solutions to sodium hydroxide are allowed
- Electric ring heater, which may be coupled to a temperature sensor, is described as another possible way for applying heat
- Mercury stem thermometers are replaced by temperature measuring devices allowing similar temperature determinations to be made.
