What is BS EN IEC 62442‑3 – Lamp control gear about?
BS EN IEC 62442‑3 is a European standard that discusses the controlgear for tungsten-halogen lamps and LED light sources for methods of measurement to determine the efficiency of controlgear.
BS EN IEC 62442‑3 defines a measurement method for the power losses of electromagnetic transformers as well as the power losses and the standby power of electronic convertors for tungsten-halogen lamps and the LED light source(s).
BS EN IEC 62442‑3 is applicable for control that is designed for use on DC supplies up to 1 000 V and/or AC supplies up to 1 000 V at 50 Hz or 60 Hz. A calculation method of the efficiency of the mentioned controlgear for tungsten halogen lamps and LED light source(s) is also defined.
BS EN IEC 62442‑3 applies to electrical controlgear-lamp circuits comprised solely of the controlgear and of the lamp(s) (LED light sources). For multipurpose power supplies, only the lighting part will be considered.
BS EN IEC 62442‑3 specifies the measurement method for the total input power, the standby power and the calculation method of the controlgear efficiency for all controlgear sold for domestic and normal commercial purposes operating with tungsten-halogen lamps and LED light source(s). The term "LED light sources" includes LED modules and LED lamps.
Note: BS EN IEC 62442‑3 does not apply to:
- Controlgear which form an integral part of lamps (LED light sources)
- Controlgear circuits with capacitors connected in series
- Controllable electromagnetic controlgear.
Who is BS EN IEC 62442‑3 – Lamp control gear for?
BS EN IEC 62442‑3 on the energy performance of lamp control gear applies to:
- Manufacturers of lamps
- Quality testing personnel
Why should you use BS EN IEC 62442‑3 – Lamp control gear?
Control gear is one or more components between the supply and one or more lamps that may serve to transform the supply voltage, limit the current of the lamp(s) to the required value, provide starting voltage and preheating current, prevent cold starting, correct power factor or reduce radio interference.
The requirements and tolerances specified in BS EN IEC 62442‑3 help you on the testing of a type test sample submitted by the manufacturer for that purpose. This sample consists of units having characteristics typical of the manufacturer’s production and being as close to the production centre point values as possible.
BS EN IEC 62442‑3 helps you to build consumer trust and confidence in the product. With obedience and compliance to BS EN IEC 62442‑3, you can be ensured that the Energy Performance of lamp control gear consistently meets and exceed quality assurance targets.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN IEC 62442-3:2018 supersedes BS EN 62442-3:2014+A11:2017, which will be withdrawn on 7 June 2021.
