What is ISO 21395‑2 – V-block refractometer method about?
ISO 21395‑2 is an International Standard that focuses on optics and photonics. It gives the best testing methods for the refractive index of optical glasses.
ISO 21395‑2 specifies a method to determine the refractive index of optical glass with accuracy within 3 × 10-5 at the wavelength range from 365 nm to 2 400 nm by using the V-block refractometer method.
While ISO 21395‑2 can be used for non-glass materials, the user is informed that only optical glass has been considered in the development of ISO 21395‑2, and other materials can have issues, which have not been taken into consideration.
Who is ISO 21395‑2 - V-block refractometer method for?
ISO 21395‑2 on test methods for refractometer is useful for:
- Manufacturers of fibre optic devices
- Manufacturers of optical fibre
- Fibre optic technicians
- Testing authorities
Why should you use ISO 21395‑2 - V-block refractometer method?
While the fibres are sold in lengths on the scale of kilometres, they are normally cut into short lengths for use in these intra-connections. The fibres are overcoated or buffered for the purpose of making protected pigtails, they are used without overcoating. They are colour coded.
ISO 21395‑2 also specifies the method to determine the refractive index of optical glasses with the V-block refractometer. Some explanation of the V-block refractometer can be found in Reference. The refractive index of optical glasses is the most important characteristic of the optical elements manufactured from them.
Regarding the standardization of the method of refractive index measuring method of optical glasses, the minimum deviation method is defined as ISO 21395‑2.
ISO 21395‑2 is intended to aid in measuring the refractive index of optical glasses accurately and improving the communications between raw optical glass suppliers and optical element manufacturers as well.
By using ISO 21395‑2, you can prepare an easier and faster V-block refractometer method which requires less technical skill for measurement. Therefore, ISO 21395‑2is commonly used by people to check the quality of optical glass products on a daily basis.
