summary
This SAE Standard defines a systematic, nondestructive strain-gage test method for evaluating stresses in cantilevered boom crane structures under specified static loading conditions.
description
SAE J1063â„¢ MAR2026 is a revised Surface Vehicle Standard issued in January 1974 and revised in March 2026, superseding SAE J1063 JUN2013. It applies to mobile, construction-type lifting cranes using cantilevered boom crane structures and associated jibs. The standard provides a systematic, nondestructive procedure for determining induced structural stresses under specified static loading conditions using resistance-type electric strain gages, along with acceptance criteria for working and overload tests. It covers terminology, applicable references, test applications, suspended and side loading methods, facilities and equipment, test preparation, test procedures, stress calculations, column buckling evaluation, strength margins, and suggested test report content.
Application Scope: Intended for crane manufacturers, testing agencies, structural engineers, inspection personnel, and other qualified professionals evaluating mobile construction-type lifting cranes with cantilevered booms and associated jibs. The method supplements basic design analysis and does not apply to lift capacity on tires.
