SAE J1180 FEB2026 is an SAE Recommended Practice for mobile cranes equipped with telescopic boom length indicating devices. It defines minimum requirements for accuracy, temperature performance, readout visibility, adjustable set points, operational checks, installation, maintenance, labeling, manuals, calibration, performance evaluation, testing procedures, test data, and accuracy calculations.
The recommended practice requires indicated boom length to remain within ±2% of the actual boom length and specifies evaluation across ambient temperatures from -30 to 50 °C (-22 to 122 °F). It also provides requirements for initial and periodic testing using measured boom lengths and documented test records.
Application Scope: Mobile cranes used in lifting crane service with variable-length, telescopic booms and equipped with boom length indicating systems.
