SAE J1228-2026 Small Craft - Marine Propulsion Engine and Systems - Power Measurements and Declarations

This SAE Standard specifies requirements for measuring, testing, documenting, and declaring the power of marine propulsion engines and systems used in small craft.

SAE J1228 MAY2026 specifies test requirements for determining the power of marine propulsion engines and systems used in recreational craft and other small craft with hulls less than 24 m in length. The standard covers internal combustion engines and electric propulsion systems, including test conditions, fuel and lubricant requirements, data acquisition, power and speed declarations, electric propulsion performance testing, manufacturing tolerances, correction methods, measurement accuracy, and reporting requirements. It also provides guidance for documenting and verifying the manufacturer’s declared power in accordance with applicable ISO 3046 requirements.
