description
SAE J2177 MAR2026 is an SAE Recommended Practice for chassis dynamometer testing of DOT Class 6, 7, and 8 on- and off-highway heavy-duty road vehicles equipped with compression ignition engines. It defines test equipment, vehicle preparation, operating conditions, instrumentation, test measurements, data correction methods, power correction factors, data analysis, and presentation of results. The procedure determines power delivered through drive tires, corrects observed power to reference air and fuel conditions, accounts for tire-roller slip, and compares corrected wheel power with expected wheel power. The document was issued in April 1992, revised in March 2026, and supersedes SAE J2177 APR1992.
Application Scope: Applicable to heavy-duty road vehicles with manual or automatic transmissions and single or tandem rear drive axles undergoing chassis dynamometer power testing.
